Maya Bay situated on Phi Phi ley has been made famous by the filming of the beach in 2000 featuring Leonardo Di Caprio.
Up until 2005 camping was indiscriminate and rubbish and damage to the island caused the National Park authorities to ban camping on the island.
In November 2007 planned camping was reintroduced with one tour operator allowed to bring limited numbers of people to the island under strict conditions over rubbish removal and customer behaviour.
The trip is run by two Phi Phi locals and one Australian expat.
Customers meet at Lemongrass restaurant (next to the post office) on Phi Phi Don and depart for the island at 4pm every day (weather and customer demand permitted).
A purpose converted fishing trawler transports customers to Maya Bay after stopping at the Viking Cave and snorkelling and kayaking at Pilet Bay, Losama Bay or Shark Point (depending on tides). Fruit is served on board.
We arrive on ‘the beach’ around 5 pm just as all the day tourists are leaving the island and the island slowly but surely becomes deserted.
